Slipping Accidents

Slips can be caused by spills, unsatisfactory cleaning procedures or leaks from freezers or refrigerated units.

Improperly positioned signs or displays can fall on customers.

Accidents in Car Parks

Supermarket car parks especially in cold weather may not be properly maintained and gritted. Slipping accidents are common.

If you have an accident you should contact Lawford Kidd 0800 027 1480 for free advice.

You should always make sure the accident has been reported to the store and they have a record of what happened taking note of the  names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses.

Employees

Special health and safety provisions give additional protection for employees. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 provide that every traffic route or floor has to be properly maintained, have no hole or be uneven or slippery. The floor must be properly maintained and kept free from obstructions.   If you work for a supermarket or shop and have an accident and can show the company  hasn’t complied with these Health and Safety Regulations you will have a claim against the store’s insurers.

Lawford Kidd have succeeded in a large number of claims against supermarkets and shops: £40,000 was recovered for an elderly lady who tripped on  the strap of a handbag which had been left dangling on the floor at the end of a rack. She suffered a serious leg injury and insurers agreed substantial compensation after Court action.

All supermarkets have a duty of care to ensure customers are safe whilst shopping in their supermarkets.   Large chains comply with high standards of care but there can be a situation where unfortunately a hazard is left on the floor such as a spillage or an improperly placed article that causes you to trip.

There are a number of different types of shop accident.
