Other sources of compensation

In addition to the claim made against someone arising out of their carelessness, there are other sources of funding which may apply to you.

Private insurance

Some employers have a private insurance scheme where you can claim an automatic lump sum from them if you have an accident at work, without having to show it was anyone’s fault. You should always check with your employer to see if this is the case; some large employers have these schemes, Scottish Power being one example. The Electrical Contractors Association also has such a scheme covering all their members’ employees.

The DSS

The DSS will pay industrial disablement benefit if you have an accident at work and you become disabled by 14% or more. You should ask your local DSS office to send you the relevant form (BI100A) so that you can submit a claim. Phone 01292 666000.

Criminal Injuries Compensation Board

If your injury resulted from a crime of violence, you can claim from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. Special rules apply to these claims; at present these are likely to be less generous than a normal claim for damages against an insurance company. There is a two year time limit for settling a claim.
